FAMESPY EXCLUSIVE: Interview with NATALI GERMANOTTA! LADY GAGA’S Aspiring Fashion Designer Lil Sis Makes Debut in ‘Telephone’ Video:

March 30th, 2010 · No Comments

Natali Germanotta, the younger sister of Stefani Joanne Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga, made her debut in the “Telephone” video. Since then, everyone from Page Six to Gawker has been talking about Natali, dying to know what she’s like, what she thinks of her sister’s fame, and does she wear Gaga’s clothes.

In the video, 17-year-old Natali plays one of the women put in prison with Gaga, who is subsequently broken out of jail by Beyonce Knowles. “When she [Gaga] is on the phone in jail, there’s a girl behind her that’s in the frame that looks a lot like Gaga,” designer Brian Lichtenberg says. “That’s her sister.”

I actually spoke with Natali Germanotta, Lil Gaga as I call her, during New York Fashion Week in February.

Seated in the front row of the Allison Parris Fall 2010 runway show was Natali Germanotta, aspiring fashion designer and the younger sister of pop-superstar Lady Gaga.

As a fan of brand’s feminine aesthetic, Natali described Allison’s fall collection as “new and fresh” and loved how she delicately incorporated masculine details, such as leather and chains, into the soft and lush pieces while still retaining a coquettish feel.

Natali became a fan of the brand after she donned an Allison Parris Lace Trapeze Dress to the 2010 Grammy Awards. The organic cotton crocheted confection (retail $300) has sexy grosgrain straps and is Drop Dead Gorgeous!!

Natali worked backstage at the Allison Parris Fall 2010 show and Parris said of her experience working with Germanotta, “Anyone who has worked back stage at a fashion week show knows that it’s not nearly as glamorous as it sounds. Natali was a pleasure to have backstage on our crew though, she jumped right in and let us know that she was there to work and willing to do anything.

Lace Trapeze Dress

“At one point I passed by her and she was sitting on the cement floor in her dress and heels cutting out seating assignment numbers for the chairs. She doesn’t act entitled at all, it’s very endearing.”

Endearing certainly describes Natali and her relaxed demeanor. When I approached her about an interview she seemed surprised, and cautious, and when I explained what I wanted to discuss she smiled with approval and checked with mom, who gave me the ok.

Dressed head-to-toe in what I call the NYC uniform – black ruffled button-down shirt, black slim pants, and black heels – Natali fit right in with the fashionable attendee’s at the show.

When I asked Natali about her experience working backstage she replied, “I’ve got to start somewhere” and then added, “It’s interesting to learn the ropes.”

Even though she is still in high school, Natali aspires to be a fashion designer herself. Well spoken and thoughtful, she speaks highly of designers that have grasped the concept of creating interchangeable pieces that are meant to be mixed with other items in your wardrobe, allowing the wearer to create their own unique look.

Germanotta’s maturity was refreshing and her ability to engage in a conversation had me surprised that I was talking to a high school student. But her enthusiasm and excitement over the industry, and what her future holds, had my attention. Not one to ride the coattails of anyone, Natali aspires to do it on her own.

It’s this fashion sixth sense that Natali takes away from her fabulous older sister, Lady Gaga. It’s obvious that Natali doesn’t share the same outlandish fashion sensibility as her older sister, but I was still curious how she is inspired by her.

When I asked Natali if she is influenced by what her sister wears she paused and her boyfriend quickly spoke up saying, “It’s not even the same thing.” Unsure of his defensive response I asked if my question was a concern, but Natali quickly held his hand as if to let him know she could handle herself and went on with the interview.

Reverting back to her initial thoughts on interpreting fashion into something totally unique and your own, Natali said although Lady Gaga has the luxury of working with multiple designers to gain access to the most sought-after, high-end pieces, she uses those items create a unique look that reflects her own personal style. Mixing and matching styles, contrasting prints, textures, Lady Gaga takes inspiration from the original garments, but ends up with a look that it truly her own.

Even though Natali Germanotta doesn’t wear the avant-garde, fashion-forward pieces worn by Lady Gaga, she admires the artistic approach of each garment and her sister’s ability to achieve the unexpected, which is what the Germanotta sisters are all about.

Lady Gaga called Ryan’s radio show Monday to talk about the massive debut of her “Telephone” video and the progress of her world tour.

On developing an artistic vision for “Telephone”:

“I really believe in the power of visuals and sometimes visions come to me and I know I have to do them. It doesn’t really matter if it makes sense or if it doesn’t make sense. By the end of the video, it became so much more as we explored each scene it became about transsexual women and it became about making fun of American hallmarks like soda cans and cigarettes and mayonnaise and bread.”

On what to expect in her next video:

“I dont really know! Actually Perez [Hilton] really wanted it to be a trilogy, and after he saw it he was like, “it has to have three parts” and I wasn’t really sure at the time and then he pushed me over the edge.”

On being competitive with Beyonce:

“We’re not competitive at all, we’re so different, we respect each other so much and she’s so kind and we really get along. She was so courageous in this video. She trusted me because she likes my work she knew that I love her and it’s a mutual respect. It ended up being a masterpiece because she was so courageous, but I’m sure you can imagine it’s a bit daunting sometimes.”

A Huge Monster Hit Album!!!

Lady GaGa has done it once again with her second studio album of 8 new tracks (you even get a bonus track, a remix of Bad Romance) that she put out as a "thank you" to all her wonderful fans she calls her "little monsters." This album is very influenced by European dance, German techno, and Goth synths, but is mainly a pure pop album. The stand out tracks on here are: the lead off single, Bad Romance which is currently #1 on both the iTunes singles & video charts, Monster (my personal favorite), Speechless (a song GaGa wrote for her father), Dance In the Dark, Telephone feat. Beyonce, and So Happy I Could Die. The whole album is really wonderful and truly amazing, but those are the best tracks. There will be a total of 4 singles to The Fame Monster to be released. What is great about this album is that you can complete your album to The Fame, by only purchasing, these 9 great new tracks to The Fame Monster! Not a bad deal for only $7.99!! Thank you Lady GaGa for giving us fans more fanstastic new music that you are sharing with the world, and this time it is personal and has nothing to do with The Fame. I love you GaGa!

Official "Telephone" Premiere Details + New Photos

E! News’ Ryan Seacrest Gets Lady Gaga’s Exclusive Thoughts On The Video As Soon As “Telephone” Hits E!’s Air

Los Angeles, March 09, 2010 - From the moment Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” danced through the radio airwaves, her millions of monsters worldwide have been eagerly and anxiously waiting for the music video debut of the hit single. The wait is finally over Thursday, March 11 when E! News exclusively premieres the epic video, which features pop superstar Beyoncé, during the show’s 11:30 PM broadcast. “Telephone” is the second single from Lady Gaga’s platinum album The Fame Monster (Streamline/Konlive/Cherrytree/Interscope).

The video will also make its online debut at midnight that evening on and so fans can view it again right away. VEVO will also offer the ability to watch the video with lyrics. After the video premieres on E! News, this enchanting artist will dissect the inspiration behind “Telephone” and explain how she has been able to out-do herself yet again exclusively to Ryan Seacrest.

“What I like about it is it’s a real true pop event,” Lady Gaga said about the “Telephone” video in a February interview with KIIS-FM and E!’s Ryan Seacrest. “When I was younger I was always excited when there was a big giant event happening in pop music and that’s what I wanted this to be.”

Gritty, erotic and wildly fierce, this nine-minute, visually stunning, cinematic masterpiece features the inimitable Beyoncé and is helmed by famed music video director Jonas Akerlund. Rich with Gaga’s unique dance stylings, iconic costume design and unworldly hair and make-up, this is far from your typical music video.

Since breaking out onto the music scene in 2008 with her Grammy Award-winning debut album, The Fame, Lady Gaga has consistently shocked and inspired. The Fame spawned four No. 1 singles “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “LoveGame,” and “Paparazzi,” making her the first artist in Billboard history to accomplish that feat on a debut album.

Released on November 23, 2009, The Fame Monster is the follow-up to The Fame, and already has produced a fifth No. 1 single for Gaga with "Bad Romance." Combined, The Fame and The Fame Monster have sold 10 million albums worldwide, while Lady Gaga’s five singles have sold more than 17 million copies total. The video for “Bad Romance” has racked up more than 140 million online views.

Lady Gaga has said that the video for “Telephone” picks up where “Paparazzi” left off but will surpass its predecessor. In the new video, Gaga's on-screen chemistry with Beyoncé transforms the song from a popular dance floor gem to a raw and explosive piece of art to be reckoned with. It is the second time the two entertainers have collaborated for a visual adventure, first on Beyonce'’s “Video Phone” and now on Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.”

Beyoncé, who enjoyed a string of #1 hits on the dance charts in 2009, including “Diva,” “Halo,” “Sweet Dreams,” which became her eleventh #1 single and the Song of the Year at the 2010 Grammys, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” was thrilled to re-team up with Lady Gaga. "It was fun to work with Gaga again. This video was a unique opportunity to do something we think will surprise our fans in a creative, edgy way not always seen."

E!’s rich history of providing its audience with the latest breaking news in entertainment and pop culture makes it the perfect forum for this incredible, jaw-dropping premiere.

Three brand new behind the scenes photos have just been released on - click below to see each one in full size now, and go to the PHOTOS page to see the rest in anticipation for the video premiere Thursday!
